Explorer behaving very strangely

Since installig some recent updates, I've seen the following symptoms on my
home (XP Home) and work (XP Pro) machines:

* When I load a shortcut to a folder, each time I do this, a new instance of
Explorer loads. Previously it used to find an existing instance of the
folder (if previously opened) and bring that to the foreground. I liked this
functionality. (Both Home and Work);

* When I right-click on a folder in the left pane and choose "Search"
nothing happens. I can still search by manually clicking the "Search" button
on the toolbar (work PC only);

* When I right-click in Explorer and try to copy a file, Explorer completely
locks up and has to be killed by Task Manager. Similarly, if I am
downloading a file and right-click in the File Open dialog to create a
folder to put the file in, Explorer immediately locks up and has to be
killed. Most annoyingly, I must then renavigate to the website and
re-download the file (home PC only).

Whats going on here? I would say that as a user I'd want MS to not only fix
security bugs to to fix problems with the software not related to security.
If this sort of thing continues, I'm considering moving to Linux.

Any seen any of these problems and know how to resolve them. The worst is
the 3rd one above. I'd really like to see that resolved. Note: I've no
"funny" software running.

Thanks,
Alain

Do a system restore before the updates and wait till wednesday and then
reinstall them. They have a fix for the problems that are being caused
by the updates. Turn updates off till then

MS will release an revised version of KB908531 (MS06-015) on
April 25th. For details please see the FAQ section of this bulletin:

Will the new updates appear with new KB numbers or will the offending
KB908531 still appear as this number after April 25th? I've also noticed
that the right-click search which I said was not working on my work PC only
is also not working on my home PC :o(

A bone of contention here: On the website you mentioned MS mention this
Kerio Firewall and HP Share something software. I don't use either of those
(don't even know what they are) on either my work or home PC so its a lot
more general than what MS is suggesting!

Guess I'll have to wait till Wednesday then. How did MS manage to get this
so wrong? I notice a LOT of people are having problems. Was it an internal
mixup with the validation department or maybe a rush job through
development?

Thanks,
Alain

Go remove the updates manually or just restore the machine to any date before
you installed these updates. I have the updates you are talking about in my
XP pro and i never had any problem like that. If you have Network protocol,
check it because there are options that are set to stop people from using
right click. However are these option are set up by the network
Administrator. So at work, ask the network administrator to check out this
issue for you. At home, restore your pc, and go online look for the SP2 cd if
you dont have it yet. Microsoft will send it to you for free so do not go and
buy from anyone. If you already have Windows XP SP2, go ahead and download
these updates but only after this wednesday. You know, it is technology, it
is really not something you can rely on because you never know what can
happen.

I've just installed the latest KB908531 update (with reboot) and things seem
to be working much better...

Oh, thanks very much for letting us know that. I was wondering what
would happen after the revised patch was installed. Glad all is well
for you now.
