Windows explorer keeps crashing.
Also cannot load XP service pack; says I have 3rd party
kernel running therefore unable to install?!

Mike,
Sounds like explorer is corrupted, try using a different
browser (like try getting a friend to download NetScape
for you). As far a a 3rd party kernel running, did you
upgrade your OS from something different? Was that
machine running UNIX or some other proprietary Windows
OS? Are you maybe running a pirated copy of XP?
If you don't want to discuss it here, just email me.
Hope this info helps.

Can you give the complete *verbatim* text of the message produced when
you try to install XP Service Pack 1?

And if the error message is from Service Pack 2 rather than Service
Pack 1 then remember that Service Pack 2 is still undergoing beta
testing, and the meaning of "beta version" is "too full of bugs to be
released".

Good luck

Windows Explorer is the user interface shell in Windows.

Internet Explorer is the web browser.
