I have a spreadsheet that uses the formula above to calculate different
rates. The starting PMT is at the top of the table and the formula above
calculates the amounts in the cells below it based on the rate in the
leftmost column. It works but I cannot find any reference to =TABLE in any
funcion lists. The spreadsheet was originally created in either Excel 5 or
Excel 7. Can anyone help explain this function and why I cannot find it. It
is not a custom function - at least it doesn't appear to be as there are no
macros in the workbook.

Hi

from your description of it it sounds like a data table .. .have a look
under the Data menu ... and in Help for details.

... {=TABLE(,c6)}

The above is a formula refering to a 1-variable data table
but one which has to be set-up via clicking Data > Table menu
(it *cannot* be typed in and entered like a "normal" array formula)

Type: 'data tables' in Excel's help for more info.

There's also a 2-variable data table which reads
both row and column inputs to output what-if results

This link has a pdf file which covers the data-table topic
in some detail (watch the line wrap):

for a simple example set-up for
a 1-variable and a 2-variable data table
