I need some expert help please... After logging in to XP I am not able to run any executable programs after about 20 seconds. When I try to run any .exe program I receive the error message:

"only part of read process memory or write process memory request completed"

If I try to run a program before about 20 seconds are up then the program executes. I am assuming that there is a program loading into memory that is causing this error but I can't figure out what it is. This problem started occuring after I used a Spyware removal program to zap spyware off of the computer. The next time I rebooted the problem occured. However, the problem could also be a virus or something else, as the computer had not been rebooted for several days before this happened.

In order to try to fix the problem I used msconfig to boot the computer in safe mode and then removed some of the services and startup programs. As a novice I completely screwed things up and permenantly stuck the operating system in safe mode - and removed services I shouldn't have so the computer wouldn't let me log in. I 'fixed' this problem by a) installing a new version of windows xp pro in a windows2 directory, b) repairing the version of xp in /windows and then going on to the new version of xp in /windows2 to modify the boot.ini file, etc.
So, I can now start the computer using xp with the windows2 installation - and I do not have any problem running executibles under this version of xp. so i am assuming it is not a hardware or memory problem...

I was also able to run msconfig on the broken version of Windows XP to remove some of the startup programs (i can run msconfig if I start it within 20 seconds!), and I have also been able to start regedit (if I am fast with the mouse), but I am not sure what the problem is or how to fix it.

Any advice or help an expert can offer is greatly appreciated. I have been working on this for hours and am pulling my hair out. Thank you in advance for sharing your expertise.

Please email me at (e-mail address removed) if you can help.
Thank you.

You can't run two versions of windows on the same partition. This is
probably the reason for your problem. The exe file doesn't know which
windows folder to look for the supporting files. I think a complete
reinstall is needed. If you decide to reinstall make sure you delete the
partition that windows is on and create a new partiton. This you can do
during the windows installation setup. If you need to have two copies of
windows on your system they need to go on seperate partitions.

John,
Thank you for your reply. I understand that having two versions of windows on the same partition is a bad thing...
however, the problem is not related to this. The problem existed before I installed the second version of windows. I realize I may have other problems because of the second version of windows, but this was a pre-existing problem. I was told that once I fix the old version of windows I can remove the new windows directory...

Again, the original version of windows has the operating error detailed below, but the new version of windows operates with no problems at all. therefore I think it is a problem with a virus or something else that is running when the original version of windows starts up. Any advice would be appreciated on how to solve the problem of the "only part of read process memory or write process memory request completed" error.

Thank you for your time. I appreciate it.

Jeff I assume you have run your anti virus software? If so what were the
results? It might also be worth running spyware software such as spybot
search and destroy and ad-aware.
Is that 'all' of the error message you are receiving. Are there any numbers
after the message or before it? Can you also checl the event viewer (control
panel>administrative tools>event viewer) Check all the sections -
applications, security etc to see if an event error has been registered at
the time of the error message. If an error messages has been recorded double
clcik on it for more information.
How long have you had this problem and, the most important, what changed?
Problems like this don't simply appear. Something has to have been changed
for it to happen.
One suggestion i will make, if the problem is only recent, is if you have a
system restore point prior to when the problem began try restoring back to
that point and see what happens.
