Expanding RAID 1+0 partition

I have a Smart Array 431 controller in my server, two 18.2GB drives. I just
purchased two 144GB drives to replace the 18.2 for added room. From previous
threads I have read that I should power down the server, remove drive 0 and
add a new drive to that array. Turn the server on and let the array fix
itself. Once completed, power down and repeat with the second drive. My
question is...

Will Windows 2000 notice that the dynamic disk is now 144GB instead of 18GB?
Do I need to do something for the new room to show up?

Thank you,
Douglas McIver

You will need to extend the partition using diskpart.exe, which is
downloadable from the microsoft website. This process does not need a
reboot.

it depends what you want to do. Do you want to increase your partition size
as well as the added space? With hardware RAID, things will be different
than software so you need to be clear what you have and in detail what you
want b4 you start running diskpart and replacing drives.

Right now the RAID 1+0 array is two 18GB drives, windows has it showing as
drive D:. I don't want anything to change, I still want it to be Drive D.
The drives are hardware raid on a Smart Array 431 controller from Compaq/HP.

Thanks,
Douglas

Not sure what's going on here.

Minimum Drives for a RAID 1+0 (AKA RAID 10, RAID 1/0 )
is 4 Drives, so you're probably running either RAID 1 or RAID 0

If you do have 4 Drives in a RAID 10 ARRAY then the size
will be limited to that of the Smallest Drive, so you'd need to
replace all 4.

Additionally, your 144Gb Drives are probably Ultra 320 SCSI (?)
and may not be supported by the Smart Array 431. Have you checked ?

You may also want to look at HP's Virtual Replicator to manage your
Array.

Strange, in the Compaq Array Configuration Utility it says the array is
RAID 1+0. But there are only two drives. I guess it is RAID 1 since it is
half of the total size of both drives.

The Smart Array 431 does not support Ultra320, it will only take it at Ultra
160 but according to Compaq it will work fine.

Thanks!

Ok! another one for you now.
If your Array is drive D, What's Drive C ?
How big is it, and what's it's Partitions ?
.....and what is on C and on D ?

( ....thinking you may be able to clone to C and then Back to the New
Array )

The server is a Compaq ML350, with four 18.2GB drives. Drives 0 & 1 are
RAIDed together to form the C: of the server. Drives 2 & 3 are raided to
for the D:. The D: is now running at 16 or so GBs full, Drice C: is running
6GB full. I am going to increase D: to 144 (hopefully).

Thanks,
Douglas

Douglas.
At this stage I'd respectfully suggest that you pay a competent IT person
to come in and set up the expanded array for you.

A. It ill get done faster than this whole process is taking. ( and time
is money )
B. It will be safer. ( and that's big money )

While it's admirable that you want to learn, and do-it-yourself, you
really need someone onsite who can look at your setup and see what is
really there, and then deal with it appropriately. Have them
explain/teach you so you'll know next time if you want.

Sorry, but I'm not confident with the idea that I really know what you've
got there, and so don't feel I can advise you.
If you or I as a consequence have misread what's there you will most
likely break your array and hose everything.

Get someone competent onsite.
The risk isn't worth it.

Hi Ricardo,

Yes.

Not supported by Symantec though, in the same manner as no drive imaging
products are supported by MS.

Can Ghost do hardware RAID yet?? PowerQuest's imaging utilities have
been able to do hardware RAID for years already.

Great. Thx for the update!
