I can not shut down Windows Messenger. I get the
following error when I select exit from right clicking on
the system tray icon: "There are other applications
currently using features provided by Windows Messenger.
You must close other applications before you can exit
Windows Messenger. ...". I have removed all applications
from startup (except Digital Line Detect) and restarted
my machine. Before performing any other tasks on my
machine, I tried to exit and got the same error. Has
anyone else had this behavior and found out how to
correct it? Is there a way to determine what processes
are using WM services? Thanks.

Greetings Billy,

Do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a new
"instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Windows Messenger and cause it
to also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
