.exe downloads

When I try to download .exe files (driver updates etc) my system
"recognises" them as .html files and attempts to download as
filename.exe.html. Obviously they cannot then execute, and istall the
update. Thanks to the dear friend who was mnding my PC for a few months - I
don't know what setting he has changed to make it do this. Any ideas?

Take a look at Doug's site, linked below.
Click on XP-FIXES, then on the "restore file associations" item.
