Exchanging hard drive

I have a 10g hard drive that is old and running out of
room anyway. I have a new 40g hard drive that I am going
to replace it with. What program could I use(price
doesn't matter), to image the entire disk and place it on
the new disk? Will this work(boot) since it is a
different drive? If all else fails I will just do a clean
install. Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge.

XP Pro. To use Ghost would I have to connect the new HDD
while the old one is still connected? I have Systemworks
2004 Pro, which also includes Ghost(I think). Will the XP
Backup be enough to do what I need or, since I have it,
should I use Norton Ghost?

Yes, they both have to be connected at same time to clone one to the other
(unless external disk is used).
I haven't done it with Ghost, but the HD manufacturers usually have a
program to do that.
It usually involves jumpering new (bigger) disk as slave, connecting it to
computer, booting (from HD mfg's floppy), cloning (old->new), shutting down,
disconnecting BOTH disks, jumpering new as master (on primary IDE),
connecting it. Now booting from the new one, _should_ be OK. Do it a few
times and check that the system (h/w and OS) is running OK, then you cxan
connect the old disk (jumpered as slave on primary IDE) and format it.

XP Backup will not come close to doing what you want, you will need a
product like Ghost.

Check out CasperXP. There is a free and a Pro version. The
free version may do all you need or want. The Pro version
allows you to more extensively alter partition sizes during
the process whereas the free version is limited in this
area. I have used both with WindowsXP not even knowing it
has been moved. Last update was from a 120GB with 6 Parts
to a 160 with 8 Parts including about 108GB of data.
Process took about 1 hr 20 min. total. It does require both
drives connected with old drive as primary. After the copy,
change the new drive to primary and boot 'er up. Super easy
to use compared to Ghost IMHO.

You can find it here:

Yes, of course--whether you use Ghost or any other program.. You can't read
from the old drive unless it's connected, and you can't write to the new one
unless it's connected.

Yes.

No.

Although Ghost is one choice of programs which will do it, there are others.
But as you say, since you already have a copy, you might as well use Ghost.
