If you have any suggestions please let us know.

Since JR is unresponsive to answers posted in reply to his original plug
for this undescribed 64 kb executable, I will duplicate this reply to
all future such posts from him or her.

Do yourself a favor and don't let curiosity overcome common sense. Don't
download and run that file.

By the way, Spamcop says that the OP was another "Google-groups" post.

I didn't run the file, but i was curious enough to run them through on
demand scans on http://www.virustotal.com/ and
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

And it came up clean. Of course that doesn't mean anything since in
some cases, they are packed such that the Antiviruses memory scanners
will catch them only when they execute....

I'm not crazy enough to run it though....

The executable is compressed with UPX: Unless your AV program
uncompresses UPX executables it won't detect a Virus.

Thanks, Aaron. That's exactly where I'm coming from. I.e. I don't know
if it's a virus, but since there's not any response to replies inquiring
about the "program", I'm just going to assume the worst.

I downloaded it on my Linux machine and read it using cat cdd.exe | less

If I were a programmer I could tell you what it does, but I ain't.
I did see a reference to Paul and Eudora and Sean and that it must be
run on a Windows machine.

I suppose renaming the file to cdd.txt would open it in Windows notepad
if someone else wants to look at it.

Yes. I actually discovered that when I was poking around with the file.

But UPX is common enough that many antiviruses have generic unpackers
for it, in particular KAV, Norton etc for sure, and none of them find
anything.

UPX v1.25 won't uncompress the executable, so I figured the integrated
UPX decompressor in your AV program won't either.

Guess who submitted it?

Heh. Well I for one am at a loss. Who?

On this page: http://tinyurl.com/9vujl

the download is described as requiring the "the latest Media codec to
start it".

If you go to this page:

http://designoutpost.tripod.com

you see a reference to:

John Richmond
Church Street 15th, New York City
NY, USA

and are encouraged to "(Please contact me by private e-mail)", yet no
email address is given. The download link in the OP is described as
"Rendal Auditorium (res)"

Fortunately, on that page there is also a link for reporting abuse to
Tripod and I have done so.

Well, it turns out that it was some kind of malware most likely. I filed
