Having just replaced a faulty motherboard, we now find that back up
documents will not open as we appear to have lost excel. How do we reinstall
as our restore CD will not reconise the PC.

Many thanks in anticipation ASH

It sounds like you didn't replace the motherboard with the identical
model and/or you didn't get the motherboard from the original computer
mftr. (OEM). Your restore cd was only for the original equipment.
You'll need to either contact the OEM for an updated recovery cd if you
bought the new motherboard from them or you'll need to purchase the
operating system (Windows).

The restore CD will not work if the motherboard is not the exact same model as
the original one.

XP would need to be re-installed since the motherboard has changed.

The version of XP is more than likely OEM. You would need to buy a new
version of XP since the version you have is forever tied to the faulty
motherboard.

Excel was never part of any version of Windows. If Excel was delivered with
the PC then it might also be OEM and you must buy a new version. OEM software
is tied to the first PC (or motherboard) it is installed on.
