When I open excel and use my mouse any and all cells I
touch are painted. I can not close the file or use any
commands because the painting continues ad in finitum. I
suspect something has happened because I have had this
program and used it for years and now all of a sudden...?
Can anyone help please
Thanks Lost

Pressing F8 has no effect. When I am in this situation the
only way I can close the file is to hit ctrl alt delete
and end task. Even then it says " can not quit Excel". Any
other ideas?
Thanks

Lost,

When you say painting, do you mean the little paint brush is present where
ever you go?

If so, hit the paint brush again. When you hit the paint brush twice in
rapid succession, it remains "on" until you turn it "off" by hitting it
once.

Or do you mean whatever cells you touch become part of an extended
selection?

Hitting F8 again ought to have cleared that. If not, I have a wild guess
for you. Try disabling or removing your mouse drivers. (Make sure you have
or know where you can locate your mouse drivers to reinstall later.) I once
had this problem, and found the mouse driver to be problematic. But this is
a wild guess, so feel free to experiment but also exercise caution.

Hope that helps.

Kevin

I think you're right Kevin. I have the same problem sometimes and I give
the scroll wheel a boot to fix mine.

Rob,

Thank you for your comments. I know some others don't even bother to load
their mouse drivers period, because they find the drivers flaky. I like
using my various "additional" button on my MS Mouse. But every once and a
while it seems to cause grief. I don't understand it, but I seem to work
around it.

Regards,
Kevin
