I have ofice 97 installed on a WINdows XP machine. WHen
ever I try to open an excel spreadsheet by double
clicking the file it opens up but I also get a dialogue
box that says a document with the same name as(file
opened)even if the documents are in different folders to
pen second document either close one or rename a
document. I click on ok and the dialogue goes away but
the file I clicked remanis opened. First off this happens
even when excel is not running so another file is
definetly not opened. If I open excel first then open the
file through excel I do not get this error. What is up?
Thanks.

Your OS must be configured under folder options-General to Single-click to open the pointed or underlined item. I use this feature since it the items on the PC then work like a link on the Internet
Your problem will occur with even Word documents and a whole lot of other applications
So don't double click. Click just once.

Try the usual fixes for this problem.

Tools>Options>General uncheck "Ignore other Applications"
Exit Excel and try again

If this doesn't work try to re-register Excel

Close Excel first and
On the Windows Taskbar

1 ) Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
2) Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.
See the space between exe and /regserver

You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.
In that case Start>Run "C:\yourpath\excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.
