Excel Versions Puzzle

I seem to have more than one version of Excel in my machine. Some
questions:

* Is EXCEL 97 the same as EXCEL 8.0

* Why do I have a bunch of small files labelled Excel 4?

* Is there a newer version of Excel that offers BIG improvements for
simple spreadsheets (no Uruguayan economic studies, no comet
trajectories!)

Hi

If you do any VBA programming, userforms and/or data interactions with
databases, then Excel 2000 is a huge improvement. For heavy duty formula
work, Excel XP is said to be a better performer. For "simple" I'd say every
version since (and including) Excel 5 is just fine. There are nice new
features in every upgrade, but it's up to every user to decide wether it's
worth doing.

HTH. Best wishes Harald

Question 3. In my opinion... stick with Excel 97 - unless you are the type
that buys a new car every two years.

If one could get a cheap copy of Excel or Office 2000, VBA6 and various
other improvements in Excel itself would make it worthwhile. On the
other hand, if one needs to use the stats functions, Excel 2003 is
best.
If the OP has Excel 97/8, then there's no compelling need to upgrade.

Thanks to all for advice.

And NO, I don't buy a new car every two years -- my wife gets the new
ones from her employer, and I get the hand-me-downs. I just wish she'd
ask for a Porsche before I get too old to climb in and out of it .....
