Excel things my spreadsheet is much bigger than it is

I'm having a problem with certain spreadsheets where if I do a ctrl-end
to go to the end of the sheet, I am taken much further than I should be
if it were only going based on blank cels. Even if I do a "clean
contents" for that cel, or delete the entire row, I still get taken
there with ctrl-end. I've even got one sheet that thinks it has 65535
rows, at least that is where ctrl-end takes me.

How can I clear up these cells that Excel thinks are active so I can
have ctrl-end go to the correct spot, and make things like the Excel
file comparer that I use work a lot faster (since it also thinks that
sheet has 65535 rows!

Yeah, I've already tried deleting cells to the end of the sheet (as
suggested on the site), and it still thinks they are there. Very strange.

Did you delete or clear contents?

Delete is the way to go.

Also, don't forget to SAVE after the deletion.

Some versions of Excel work best when the file is saved and closed then
re-opened.

I did Delete, but I did not save/close/reopen. When I did that, it
worked. I am suitably embarrassed since it said to do that on the
referenced website (but I didn't think "some older versions" applied to
Office XP, although I guess it is an older version.

I am used to saving but not the close/reopen part. Further good news is
my file is now much smaller than it was. Between saving it as the
current version spreadheet (as opposed to 97-2002, that cut the size in
half), and getting rid of a bunch of excess rows/columns, it's now down
to 343k from 867k.

It still thinks the document has been altered even if I just open and
try to immediately close it, however (see other thread).

See another reply in that other thread.
