I have Windows 2000, SP4 and Office 2000 SR-1. Excel takes
a good 25 - 30 seconds to open, while word or Access take
2 or 3 . Any ideas ?

the PC has plenty of grunt, its a P4 with 256mb RAm.

Cheers

Paul,

Two things come to mind. Do you have lots of add-ins that are loaded with
Excel? Also, does your anti-virus program, if any, scan files when they are
opened in Excel?

Hi

You don't say if this is when a file is double clicked to open it of if it
is when you open Excel first by itself.

These things are always worth a try since they don't cost much to try.

Open Excel, go to Tools=>Options=>General tab and make sure Ignore Other
Applications is not checked.

Close Excel
On the taskbar, click
Start>Run
Enter "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
Note the one space between exe and /unregserver

then

Close Excel
On the taskbar, click
Start>Run
Enter "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.
Note the one space between exe and /regserver

A couple more:

Clean up your windows temp folder

Use Windows start button|Find to find *.xlb. It's the file that excel stores
customized toolbar settings. Maybe it's getting bloated and causing trouble.

Rename it/them to *.xlbOLD and restart excel to see if it did.

If it didn't rename them back.

But if it did, rebuild your toolbar settings and dump those .xlbold files.

Cheers Dave,

I renamed the .xlb file (should have remembered that, i
had that problem before with another user!!) and it worked
a treat !!
