I have a list of birthdays in Excel that I would like to transfer to
someone's Outlook calendar. Is this possible?

Yes, this is possible. Use the import function in Outlook.

Try to import as an excel document first. If that doesn't work, save the
document as tab separated (delimited) and retry.

It worked for me.

I think I'm missing a step. I defined the names in the spreadsheet (name and
birthday). When I get to the step to import, I'm not sure what to do. Would I
drag Birthday to Start Date and Name to Subject?

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

These are the steps:
-Import from another file or program
-Select the format of the file as Tab Separated (Windows)
-Browse to your excel file (that you have converted to tab separated).
-select destination folder as contacts
-click finish.

If you use header names in your excel file that match closely to outlook
names then you should not need to map any fields.

Does this help?

I just reread your post. I thought it was contacts instead of calendar. Let
me look into this.

How do I map the custom fields? I dragged the value over to Start Date, but
the OK on the bottom of the screen stays greyed out.

It must not like your date format or something. What does your date look
like in your file? Is it a complete date like 4/21/2009? It may not take it
unless you include a year. If you include the year, the next problem might
be to make it recurring.

In order to set up your Import properly, I suggest that you enter one of
the birthdays manually into Outlook Calendar, THEN Export the week that
contains it to a CSV file. Open that file and use it as an example to
configure your Birthday file from. Then Import the properly configured
file.
