Excel spreadsheet notifications

There is an excel spreadsheet which several people in my
company update on a regular basis. Is there a way for me
to be automatically notified when someone has gone in and
updated it? I know you can do this with a web server but
not sure how to do it in this case.
 
Have you tried Tools->Track Changes? That might do what you need...

Essentially this information has to be trapped somewhere and then logged.

A few thoughts as to which you could do

Send yourself an email when it closes (do you use Outlook or some other
email client).

Write an entry to a text log file.

Write an entry to the NT event file.
