Excel Slow inserting rows

Hi, I have had this problem now on 1 machine where if the user goes to
insert a new row in a spreadsheet it sometimes takes 8/9 seconds and then
carrys on. Sometimes it does it as it should, ie instantly other times it
delays.

The pc is running Windows 2000 and its an XP2200 CPU with 256mb of ram.
His older machine did this job faster, I have already re-installed Windows
once with no Joy and ive even tried both Excel 97 and Excel 2003 - with the
same results.

I have tried disabling anti-virus (no firewall because its behind a network
firewall and router), ive checked for common problems like journals and
#lastcell issues and still nothing, it seems todo it in any spreadsheet at
random times.

Any ideas?

1. I can understand this if the file is on a server.
2. Depends where in the sheet insertion takes plac
3. Setting calculation to manual should speed things up

John,

Try turning off the display of page breaks before doing the row insertion.

Same problem here, sort of. What's actually happening is that Exce
checks the network for some odd reason, even if the file is local. I
happens when you do any type of function, even copy/paste, o
filtering.

I noticed this because I use VPN to connect to my office via termina
server. Anything I do in a local install of Excel, causes m
send/receive lights to flash, and I get a delay of about 5-10 seconds
If I disconnect my VPN connection, Excel functions normally.

You can see this for yourself by turning on your systray network icon
so you can see network activity. Then take a decent size Excel file
and with no other network app running, do things like copying/pasting
filtering, sorting, inserting rows, etc... You should see networ
activity. While your local network may be very fast and this dela
isn't noticeable to you, when VPN is turned on this activity causes
delay of about 5-10 seconds.

I don't map any drives or load the file from a network. The file i
local. The program is local. But if VPN is running, the constant dela
is very annoying. This only started happening recently, though with th
recent and simultaneous additions of XP SP2, Office XP updates, and
new Nortel VPN client, it could be anything!

So here's my questions: Why would Excel suddenly try to access th
network when it is a local installation, all the data files are local
and nothing about the configuration of Excel or the files has any lin
to a network location? It seems as if it is just browsing the network
And how would I turn this "feature" off?

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions

Another odd thing is that it only happens on my work computer, not m
gaming computer, which is configured exactly the same way (XP Pro
Office XP). I do not get network activity on that pc when I open an
make changes to a file, even when I copy a known problem-file
