Created a workbook for a customer using Excel 97 and sent it to him.

He opened it up and saw code instead of the data that was supposed to
show up. He took it to work and it opened fine on Excel he has there.

There isn't anything special (no add-ins or customized functions used)
in the workbook. Just the standard functions (match, vlookup etc...)
used to create his data.

He says he is using Excel 97. But I have a feeling he is not and this
is causing the problem.

Are there any other possible causes that I am unaware of?

Have him try pressing [Ctrl + `](to the left of the "1" key).

Even try it on your end and it should toggle between the code an
values

Clay,
Using the toggle function you mentioned on my end doesn't show code. I
just moves the columns.

Maybe I didn't clarify things as good as I should have. All he i
getting is "garbled" code whe he opens the file.

It's almost as if his program isn't recognizing any functions or dat
that I send

oh ok, That key combo should toggle between the function statement and
the answer. but garbled code, I don't know.

Sorry.

I think you're probably correct; my initial suspicion
would be that he has Works at home, not Office.

If the same file opens fine on one computer and not on another the file is
ok, and the problem is definately with the computer on which it won't open.
Sounds to me like you are correct that he is not using Excel97....maybe try
sending the same file to him in the 95 format.

Maybe he didn't use xl97 to open it.

Have him open it and then have him do a Help|About.

He can read you the application (might not be xl) and the version (if it is).
