Excel saves an existing file with a 1 at the end of the name

I am new to this forum so I hope that I am not asking a question that
has been answered ten times before.

I have Excel 2002. I open an existing file and edit it. Then I save it
by pushing the Save icon or do File, Save. The program usually takes my
existing file name and adds a 1 to the end. I want to save it as the
original file name by default. How do I do this? I know that I can
delete the 1 and then save but I want it to do this by default. Is this
related to the Autosave function? I used Autosave on prior versions
without this happening. Any help that you could provide would be
appreciated.

Thanks,
Doug

If the original file is a template (xlt), excel will call it the same
and add a 1 but save as an xls file
