version?
operating system?
did it used to work and now it doesn't - if so, any programs added or
deleted?
virus scan turn up anything?
is it the "user" or the "computer" - ie can a user log in on another
computer and use excel - can someone who uses excel log into a "misbehaving"
computer and get excel to work?
have you run "detect & repair"
have you tried re-installing excel on one of the machines to see if it makes
a difference
any error message received by the users?

these are the things i would look at / try first ...

Cheers

Hi all,

I am having a problem in Excel with a couple of users in my firm. The
problem is when they open a file or just open the program it reboots the
computer. Any ideas? Thanks

This isn't good. Something's corrupt. Maybe Windows itself, maybe
Office or Excel, maybe your memory chips, or maybe the disk sectors
where Windows and/or Office are stored.

If you're working at a company with an IT department, it's time to call
them and let them try to fix this. If you're on your own, then you're
going to need to run CHKDSK or SCANDISK, depending on your Windows
version, and you're going to need to find a memory checker to check
your RAM chips. You may also need to uninstall and reinstall Office,
but only if you have the product CDs and after you backup Office
configuration files like Personal.xls, Normal.dot, *.xlb and any
add-ins.

Hi Harlan - Going by other newsgroup activity in 9X and ME groups, it would
appear that there is an issue related to hotfix KB891711 which is the
January MS05-002 patch for:-

"cursor and icon format handling could allow remote code execution."

Apparently this is causing a large number of users to report BSOD issues.
No idea if the OP is on one of these OS, or if even related here, but given
that BSOD is something that appears to get posted once in a blue moon
(sorry, couldn't resist it), the number of them appearing now would at least
give reason to check and see if perhaps it was related to that hotfix by
perhaps uninstalling and then testing using same steps that caused it to
occur before.

Haven't yet seen details of any fix or workaround other than uninstalling
the hotfix.
