Help!!

When I open a new or existing excel sheet, the first cell hi-lited is
"active".

The cell has a handle on the corner and if I try to click on the cell and
move my curser it drags all the surrounding cells as if I want copy to them.

This just occurred and I am baffled.

I need some advice. Thank you in advance.

Jim

Jim, not sure but try pressing F8 on the key board

F8 is used to "Extend a Selection". If this feature is active you will see EXT in the bottom right corner of your Excel window

I'm not sure of the exact reason for this function, but it might be part of the accessibilty for people with disabilities

Paul,

Thanks for the try but it did not work. Also wanted to let you know that I
cannot write in cell.

If I try to move the curser along the borders it will also drag the cells.

Very puzzling.

I don't think EXT was designed specifically for people with disabilities, just
a feature for anyone to select a cell then go select another one to have a
range highlighted without having to drag.

Try it. Select A1 then select M35. No need to drag.

Also SHIFT + F8 to get ADD is very handy for selecting non-contiguous cells
without holding the CRTL key.

This is a *not* uncommon problem.

Read what David McRitchie has written about it:

James,
You might try searching the Excel help files on "Accessibility for people
with disabilities". Maybe one of these features got turned on.

Hi Gord
I thought maybe it might be connected. I have a friend who works his computer from a pointer attached to the brim of a baseball cap. Any function that allows one to perform multi-key or mouse tasks with a single hand is definitely useful. I wasn't familiar with the shift F8 for selection of non-contiguous cells, which clearly is a multi-key process

Thanks for the info
