Hello:

When I go to open a new excel spreedsheet, I keep getting a Memor
error. I have removed and reinstalled Office 2000. The error does no
go away. I have a 80 gig hard drive with over 50 gig free. I have
gig of Ram. Page file is set to 700 meg.

Can anyone help me.

Thank

Sal,

I've had the same problem as you this weekend. I tried everything and
nothing worked.

Basically, I couldn't even launch Excel...it would try to start and
then just lockup. I would then get that "dangerously low" warning for
memory resources. I had to shut the machine off to reboot because
basically nothing would run.

Anyway, I went to work today and asked the guys who run our computer
dept because there's almost 500 people there and many Excel users. I
figured he's seen something like this.

He didn't remember anything exactly like this, but has seen many things
similar. He told me exactly what to do, I did it and it worked great.
It took very little time.

I could send you a PM with how to do this, or e-mail you with the
info.

Let me know if you still have this problem and want to try what worked
for me. Incidently, I posted to this Forum under the General postings
with almost the same wording as you did about this problem.

Hello AndyF:

Thank you for the reply. Could you please post the fix in the forum
what you did.

Thank you, very much.

Sal,

Here's what I did....let me know if it works for you!

1. Uninstall Office 2000

2. Remove all files under:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office

No harm done here.

This next part deals with the Windows “Registry”. Here is where my
problem and I’m almost certain your problem lies.

When you get into the Registry Editor, don’t mess with anything except
what I’ve listed. Random messing around in the Registry Editor,
although it looks like Explorer, could end up in disaster unless you
are a Registry guru who can go in there and mess around without hurting
something. So, only delete the things under the directories that I’ve
listed. Make sure that you are deleting files from exactly where I’ve
listed.

To open the Registry Editor:

1. With the mouse, hit Start, Run…and then a window will pop
up. Type “regedit”, without the quotes, and hit O.K.

You should now be in the Editor. (A box opens
upwith “Registry Editor” at the top left.)

This looks much like Explorer, with around 6 main directories.
There are 2 that you need to delete files from. Be careful to
follow the directory tree that I list. Remember, don’t just mess
around in here.

2. Double click on, or hit the “+” sign of the directory below and
click through the directories until you get to the Office
directory. The path is below:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office

Under here you should see more directories. Directories like
10.0, 9.0, 8.0, Excel, Outlook and Word.

I deleted everything under this Office directory only because it
gets put back when you Reinstall and I was told there was no
harm in doing this. What you could do, is just delete the Excel
directory under this Office directory and leave everything else
alone. If you still have the problem, you could always go back
here and delete everything under this Office directory.

3. There is another directory that you basically do the same thing
to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office

Again, I deleted everything under this Office directory.

4. Close the Registry Editor

5. Re-Install Office 2000

You should be able to launch Excel now and use any of your Excel files
again.

It sounds like andyf13 removed all the files and all the registry entries.

If you're not comfortable with playing in the registry, this might be useful:

Registry Entries

(I have no idea if it'll help with your memory error. I think I might look to
see if the memory chips were failing--but that's a guess.)
