Excel is sluggish

This seems to be a software issue with Excel and Word.
When I went to the Microsoft site and entered my software
serial number into their site, they said that because I
had purchased the software through Gateway, that I had to
ask Gateway for assistance. Gateway says to ask
Microsoft. Go figure.

Here is the problem. If I open a small document in Excel
or Word and I am not connected to the Internet, it opens
in about 1 second. If I try to open the same document
and I am connected to the Internet, it takes about 25
seconds. This started happening within the past week.
My system does not show any viruses (I purchased Norton
when I bought the machine and run it frequently). Any
suggestions?

A reported fix for this.........

Hot off the presses!

Official Fix - Norton AV problem -

Go to the Symantec website:

http://www.symantec.com/

In the lower left hand corner you will see a tiny notice concerning the
January 7-8, 2004 Norton Anti-Virus slowdown. Click the link.

In red you will see the Solution. Click that link, it will take you to
VeriSign. Click the manual download link. Click Accept. When the dialog
box pops up click Open. The Windows Certificate Import Wizard will appear.
Just allow the Wizard to install the Certificate automatically. Here's a

Remember to RE-check the "Check for publisher's certificate revocation" box
you UN-checked yesterday. The correct location of that box is on the
Symantec web-page where the VeriSign link is located.

After installing, I did note when selecting the certificate and clicking
Advanced that 'Secure Email' and 'Client Authentication' were unchecked.
Should they be?

I don't use NAV so had no need of the "fix".

Just posted the info because a lot of people were posting that Excel had
slowed down due to the Jan 7th NAV update.

I am not too familiar with certificates so can't answer.

Wait for a more knowledgeable poster or try one the Windows newsgroups.

I don't use NAV either, but a couple of days ago I started seeing an
'expired certificate' type popup when trying to access my credit card site
and it was Verisign related.

Understood.
