Hi,

I have a small database in Excel with hyperlinks to .jpg files. In Excel
97, the link would open the .jpg with the program associated with the .jpg
extension. In Excel 2002, the file is displayed with Microsoft Photo
Editor. How can I change the association in Excel?

Thanks,

Richard

I just upgraded to xl2003 and windowsXP.

Under xl2002 and win98, I could change the association and excel would respect
that and use that associated program to open the file (Irfanview for me).

But I've got the current default application for .jpg set for irfanview (with
xl2003 and winxp). But when I add a hyperlink to a .jpg file, it opens with
JASC Paint Shop Pro.

If I open windows explorer, then tools|folder options|file types tab
and scroll down to .jpg, I see that Irfanview is the chosen associated program.

But at the bottom of that dialog, there's a "restore" button with these words
nearby:

You have customized files with extension 'JPG'. To restore these files to their
default type (Paint Shop Photo Album 5 Picture), click Restore.

I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or the way windowsXP works.

I'm gonna post a question in microsoft.public.windowsxp.general to see if they
have info they can share.

(And maybe someone who knows WinXP will jump in with the real solution.)

ps. You didn's say what version of windows you're using.

I used this in the subject in the WindowsXP.general newsgroup:
File Associations and Default programs

I ran into the same problem.

I also have IrfanView as default .jpg app.

BUT......when using a Hyperlink in Excel MS Photo Editor is the app of choice.

2002 and 2003 versions.

If you remove MS Photo Editor from Office Tools via control
panel/add/remove/change and make it "not available" then IrfanView(or whatever
is default) opens the hyperlinked .jpg file.

I tested with 3 different graphics programs set as default.

No problem once MSPE was made "not available" as above.

Kinda drastic, but it works and I never had a use for MSPE anyway.

BTW Dave

I also have PSP 9 and it is so slow to open that I chucked a bunch of the file
associations in File>Preferences>File Format Associations.

I think if you do the same, the hyperlinked .jpg in Excel will open with
IrfanView.

I marked the MS Photo Editor "not available" and now IrfanView opens the
linked the .jpg. Exactly the fix I needed.

Thanks for the assistance,

Richard

I think I'm gonna just uninstall the PSP stuff. It came with my new pc
(woohoo!) and expires in 28 days--and I've gone over 50 years without using it
so far (hehe).

The learning curve for PSP is like ascending the side of "El Capitan" in
Yosemite.
