Hi all

I've been using Execl for a while now and the one thing that frustrates me is the amount of time I spend waiting for it to 'calculating...'. Is this a common problem or is it just me? I'm running Excel 97 on a P4 2.5gh machine, with 512MB of mem
I know that array formulas and vlookups contribute to the problem, but the closer I get to creating a good spreadsheet the more time it takes calculating. Surely Excel is not that power intensive, Lotus 123 doesn't seem to be as bad, but then not everyone uses it so that not a solutions. A few seconds is acceptable but the 10 second mark isn't

Does anyone else suffer this problem, is there a solution

Maybe you have a lot of formulas that aren't necessary like waiting for
future info. Or you could turn a lot of them into values and re-create with
a macro or set to manual calculation and just calculate what you need. Lots
of things you can do.

BTW
Excel frustrates me TOO

It frustrates a lot of us, but I'd rather be frustrated for a few seconds with
it, then for a hell of a lot longer without it!! :-)

The link Niek has given you will give you a lot of reasons why it can be slow,
and some tips on how to try and reduce any calculation issues.

If you are entering data and finding it takes this long between each piece of
data you enter, then try turning calc off, entering all your data, and then
turning it back on again. You could even stick a button on the sheet to allow
you to do this literally at the touch of a button :-)
