excel freezes while other apps are running in the background

it is ok when first started but as the day goes on and other apps are run
excel freezes and no actions may be done including end task. the app has been
reinstalled twice and it still does the same thing any ideas?
 
You might do better asking this in an Excel newsgroup; this one is for Word.
