Excel formula fails to execute; remains text

For some reason I have a cell that when I enter a formula, it does no
give the result of the formula but just continues to show the equatio
as if it were text. I'm careful to make sure the equal sign is i
front of the equation.

For example, in the attached jpeg screen capture I simply entered
formula of "=D424" (no quotes) to show the contents of cell D424.
Instead of giving me the value "23.00", it shows "=D424". The cel
below performs just fine.

Any insight as to what's causing the problem would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Cor

Hi
you cell is probably formated as 'Text'. Goto 'Format - Cells' and
choose 'General' as format. Re-enter your formula

OR
To toggle between formula view and normal:
<Ctrl> <~> (tilde)

OR
To convert text formulas to *real* formulas:
Select the cell and,
<Ctrl> <Shift> <~> (tilde)
Then
F2 <Enter>

Check that in Tools>Options on the view tab that "Formulas" is NOT
checked

You're absolutely right ... BUT ...
Look at
<Ctrl> <`>
And look at
<Ctrl> <~>
And tell me honestly which is easier to understand.
The <`> and <'> can be easily misinterpreted without more typing on my part
to clarify the actual keystrokes, and I don't type too well.

Strictly speaking, that should be <cntrl> ` (the 'grave' accent ... as
the key is not <shifted>). Picky I know - but that's what it says in
the help file :)

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to
think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone´s fault.
If it was Us, what did that make Me ? After all, I´m one of Us. I must be.
I´ve certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No-one ever thinks
of themselves as one of Them. We´re always one of Us. It´s Them that do
the bad things. <=> Terry Pratchett. Jingo.
