Suddenly all Excel files refuse to open

If I doubleclick on an xls file in Windows Explorer, I am getting a message
"There was a problem sending the command to the program"

Excel itself opens OK via Start-Programs, yet an attempt to open a file
using File-Open results in the file shorly flushing on the screen and then
Excel closes

Same files open well on another computer.

What can I do about it?

There different situations corresponding to different actions that can
result in this symptom. To locate exactly which one applies, you will need
to try the steps below. Please follow these steps and if the problem
persists, you will need to ask the question on the Excel newsgroup with the
results of this testing:

Steps 1
=====
1. Close all other programs.
2. Open Excel. Open Excel files in it, does the problem persist?

Steps 2
========
1. Click Run on the Start menu.
2. Type the path to Excel.exe, and add the /s switch. For example, use the
following command line:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /s

3. Click OK.
Note: /s switch command forces Excel to bypass all files in the <Windows
Dir>\Application Data\Microsoft\Xlstart folder or the alternate startup file
location. It also forces Excel to bypass the toolbar file (Excel.xlb or
<username>.xlb). You will see "Safe Mode" in the Excel title bar. Use this
switch when you want to start Excel in safe mode.

Does the problem persist?

Steps 3
========
1. Click Run on the Start menu.
2. Type the path to Excel.exe, and add the /automation switch. For example,
use
the following command line:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /automation

3. Click OK.
Note: /automation switch command forces Excel to start without loading
add-ins,
templates, or processing files in the <Windows Dir>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Xlstart folder or the alternate startup file location. You
can
use this switch to perform a "clean-boot" of Excel.

Does the problem remain?

As stated earlier, please follow up on the appropriate Excel newsgroup.
