What will XP Home edition do with an Excel file? Will it
convert automatically or do I need to buy/load Excel on
this computer?

Thanks,
Damian

Windows XP is an operating system. It is not a spreadsheet so it will not
convert a file to excel or run it. You will need to buy excel.

1) convert to what ?
2) if you want to read the file: NO (viewers are available, for example from
MS), edit XLS Files: buy Excel.

No version of Windows has ever included spreadsheet software. If you wish to
work with spreadsheets, you must purchase and install spreadsheet software,
such as Microsoft Excel.

.

As Frank stated, WinXP will not view an Excel spreadsheet.
You would need to install Excel or a viewer like Quick
View Plus (www.inxo.com). The viewer would let you view
hundreds of different file formats without having the main
program installed. You cannot modify the contents of the
file though with a viewer but you can usually copy and
paste information from the viewer.

I also found some viewers at Microsoft:
www.microsoft.com/office/000/viewers.asp
office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/xlviewer.aspx

Hope this helps!

Nothing.

No version of Windows does anything with Excel files. To do
something with Excel files requires a copy of Excel, and no
version of Windows has ever come with a copy of Excel.

If you want Excel, you need to buy it (unless you already have a
copy), either standalone or as part of Microsoft Office.

By the way, you do *not* have to buy Excel XP or Office XP. Older
versions (Excel 95, 98, and 2000) do work under Windows XP.
