Excel file size

I have a file that is 1 Mb, but only has 5 columns by 168 rows. I copy this to a new sheet, and file size is still too big. Then I erase everything on the new spreadsheet, so that it is completely blank, and file size is 900 KB. Then using zip, the compressed file is 30 KB

I must have read about 50 posts regarding the Ctrl-End check to see where the last cel is...my last cel is at cel "A1". The spreadsheet is completely empty. Yet the file size will not decrease from 900 KB

Please suggest solution.

Maybe there are some objects on the page. To remove those:

Open the Control Toolbox (View>Toolbars>Control Toolbox)
Check that the Design Mode button is activated (first button at
left end of Control Toolbox)
Choose Edit>Go To, click Special
Select Objects, click OK
Press the Delete key, to delete any selected objects.

This was exactly what I was looking for, now my file sizes have gone from up
to 3 megs, down to just over 500K. Thank you!!

Steph.

No worries. Actually, since you know the cause of the file growth, is there
a way to turn off the options for ExcelXP to be saving this junk? I'm
figuring it's because it's a webpage that I'm copying from and XP, being
more web-enabled, is keeping some of the code or something, but I'd like for
it to act more like 97 and just take the text of the page and that's
it......actually...thinking of it right now..I'm going to try to paste as
values only and see what it gives me...but if you can give me a more
permanent solution, it would be greatly appreciated.

take care,
Steph.

There are probably more sophisticated solutions, but here's what I do:

Copy the data from a web page, and paste into an Excel sheet.
While the pasted data is still selected, copy the selection.
Open a new workbook, and choose Edit>Paste Special, Values.
Then, if you need the formatting, choose Edit>Paste Special, Formats
