Recently, Excel started saving my spreadsheets with the name I give the
file followed by the .xls extension. Now, when I use the file name in
the header or footer it appears on my printed report as "ABC Report.xls"
rather than just "ABC Report". I don't want the .xls to appear, and
can't figure out how to get rid of it. What happened and how do I
change it back? I am using Excel 2002.

Thanks for your help on this small, but very annoying problem.

You probably changed an option in Windows Explorer. I'd leave it at the
new setting (it's safer to see the file extensions), but if you want to
restore the previous setting:

1. In the Windows Explorer, choose Tools>Folder Options
2. On the View tab, remove the check mark from
'Hide extensions for known file types'
3. Click OK

And one of the reasons it's safer. A lot of malicious junk is sent via email as
attachments.

If you have extensions turned off, you might think that
mylistofsalaries.txt
is ok to open since it's a text file.

But you might be hiding that extension
mylistofsalaries.txt.exe

That would jump at you if you saw it.
