Excel file into Word 2003

I'm about ready to revert to Office 2000 because this is driving my crazy.

With 2000, I used to be able to insert an Excel worksheet into Word via the
Insert, File command. It would go right in. I'd have the Word sheet set up
into columns and the document would automatically expand to the number of
pages needed.

Word 2003 will not let me do this. It seems the only options are to link it
as an object, which then raises the problem of the data not being legible do
to Word issues, or to copy and paste from Excel, which seems to me to be a
major step backwards in inter-program compatibility.

I've searched this forum for answers and so far everyone seems to be saying
that linking an object is the only way to do this.

Tell me this isn't so! Office 2000 handled inserting other office files as
files without a problem.

To insert an excel spreadsheet

Insert > object > create from file > enter the filename.

To copy a sheet edit > paste special > html format (or as Excel worksheet
object - which produces slightly different results)

If you want to maintain a link between the two so that changes in your
spreadsheet are reflected in the document - then check the link button in
the paste special dialog.

Some of the conversion filters have changed and some have been removed. It's
a question of security related issues. For years people have whinged that
Microsoft has not paid enough attention to security issues, so when they do,
people still whinge that the increased security has removed functionality.
You can't have your cake and your ha'penny and Microsoft cannot win whatever
they do.

It wouldn't be the first time that one of Microsoft's hands didn't know what
the other was doing ;)
