I am trying to solve a problem on my dad's computer. Last
night it went crazy (I was not here). I have an Excel file
saved on the desktop(not a shortcut), but when you click
on it the file will not open, instead Excel opens and does
nothing. But if i then click ope, go to desktop and click
on the file, it opens like normal. Any advice? :-(

A couple thoughts...
1. When you double-click any other Excel file (---.xls),
does the same thing happen?
2. How do you know it is not a shortcut?
2. You say it is an Excel file. How do you know? Right-
click desktop object, select Properties, and look at file
name. Is extension '.xls' (or perhaps '.lnk')? Does it
say 'Opens with: Excel'?

My *guess* is that your dad created a copy of the Excel
executable (if object is not a shortcut) or that the .xls
extension has been disassociated from Excel (if double-
clicking another .xls file does not display file in Excel).

Repost additional info if this assessment doesn't help.

I actually had this same problem...it wasn't with just one file, it wa
with every excel file I had on my cpu. I would double click it, exce
would open, but not the file. I would then go to open in excel an
have to navigate to it again to get it to open. Never did figure ou
what had caused this, nor did I ever fix it. A few months later I go
excel 2003 and all of the files open fine. Sorry no help, but I a
just trying to say I don't think it one of the above reasons

1. Yes the same thing happens
2. I know it is not a shortcut because i saved the file to
the desktop. Extension is .xls.
It has not been disassociated, because when i double click
it opens Excel, just not the document itself. I can then
open the document on the desktop through Excel, but I
still cannot open the file directly from the desktop as
before. This has worked for months, and just this morning
became a problem. Thanks, Jeremy

Did you try uninstalling and re-installing Excel? I
haven't yet, but I probably will soon. Thanks for the
input also. :-P

my first question is:

Are you sure the workbook is open?

Try window|Arrange|tiled
If it shows up, resize by hand and save the workbook.

If it didn't show up,
Try window|unhide
if it appears then, save the workbook.

If it really wasn't open, but you can open it via File|Open,

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

An alternative might be to do:
Try Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)
