I have a user with win98 512k ram P4 1500mhz Excel 2000. As of today, when
she opens excel and leaves it open or even closes it(after about 5 minutes)
it gives her the message about system being dangerously low on resources.
Excel is the only app open. nothing in her xlstart dir. Norton corp
antivirus running up to date defs. I noticed in the filemonitor util that
even after we close excel it stays open in the filemon util. Any ideas
appreciated

I can't answer your prob specifically; you'll have to
research what is hogging your memory. One area to begin
is START, RUN, MSCONFIG. Check your Startup tab to verify
no virus is loading on startup or other junk is loading at
startup to hog your memory resources. You call also call
up MS System Info, go to the Software Environment, look at
RUNNING TASKS and STARTUP. You must ascertain that the PC
environment is virus and trojan clean. A great trojan
program is PCDoorguard from www.astonsoft.com.

Also, you can try starting up Excel in safe mode: START,
RUN, type: excel /s and see if it runs correctly then.

Ascertain that excel is not loading a macro on startup.
On another PC, bring up Excel, go to help, type in start
or startup in the index window and you'll find tips.
