Good afternoon,
Lately, for an unknown reason, when i try to open a Word document, Excel
opens. Of course the document is unreadable... I looked for solutions,
nothing to do. I have Vista Ultimate and Office 2007. Nice investment... Even
uninstalling Excel is a problem (I am desperate for a solution...) I found
ways to work around the problem, mais it defeats the purpose. Anybody had the
same problem? More specifically, anyone fixed that problem?
If i get an answer in french, i will be just as happy.

The first thing I would try is to re-register Excel with Windows. Close
Excel and Word, then go to the Windows Start menu, choose Run, and enter

Excel.exe /regserver

and click OK. You may have to enter the full file name of Excel.exe
depending on your Path settings. This will cause Excel to start, rewrite all
of its registry keys back to the factory defaults then quit. Next, do the
same thing but use WinWord.exe instead of Excel.exe.

Thank you Chip for your help. Unfortunately, nothing has changed. I think i
will simply uninstall Excel as I rarely use it (and reload it when needed). I
bought what I thought would prevent problems, not create new ones. I work
with my computer and I do not buy things to spend my working hours fixing it
(or worse, my very spare hours...). Let say it is a very sad situation.
By the way, I take good care of my computer, maintain it properly and use it
99 % for simple working tasks.
I did appreciate the help offered, just like you, I wish this solution could
have solved the bug.
Thank you again.

Just double checking...

Did you do Chip's second suggestion--reregister Winword.exe?

If you didn't, then try that first. By reregistering winword.exe, it should
take back the extensions that it owns (.doc, .dot, ...)

Thank you Dave. I did try again (Excel before Word. Word before Excel) and
there is no difference. When I look at my Word documents, most of them are
Excel documents even if there is not one figure in the text! I Even
uninstalled Office completely and reinstall it with no inprovement. If this
was a car, it would be a lemon... If I cannot fix it, i will reinstall Office
XP. Let say Microsoft knows how to be nice to a good customer. Thank you for
your time. I am sure that just like me you would have loved to see the
problem fixed.

One more thing to try...

ShiftRight click on one of the offending files (.doc???)
Click on "Open With"
and choose MSWord (or Choose Program and browse to winword.exe)
and check that "always use the selected program..." box.

Repeat for each offending filetype.

Well, test it after you do one or two to see if it works first.

Well well well. It seems to be working. The problem might still exist (the
box was already checked... That's how I was opening my word documents saved
against my will in Excel format, right clicking and 'open with") but i will
know tomorrow when i receive new documents. Most of my documents are showing
to be Excel documents, and a few people experienced problems opening
documents i send them. It might be fixed, but right now I do not feel a lot
of confidence in my lemon ... Hope it is not too sour again tomorrow! It is
easy to know, when a document arrive, the attachment in the email shows Excel
document... What a mess.
Thank you again.

This morning, everything seems to be fine. I want to thank Chip and Dave for
their patience et kindness.

Glad you got it working.

(It still surprises me that the reregistering stuff didn't work.)
