Excel Columns should be referenced in numbers not letters

this is so that you can do calculations in your head about the number of
columns between two columns.

If you want it that way, use R1C1 reference style. The majority of users
don't want that as a default.
 
Have you tried this:

Tools>Options>General tab
Check: R1C1 reference style
Click the [OK] button
