In listing NYSE stock symbols, in a column, the stock symbol ACN is
automatically changed to CAN by Excel.-- this is not a correct symbol.

Have tried every thing by right clicking to clear cell, and the change
always happens.

Could there be a formula in the cell which I cannot find?

This happens both in XP and Vista Excel version 2003.

And also, inserting a dollar sign accidentally in a cell which is incorrect,
the correct sign should have been the percentage sign. Cannot correct the
error to remove the dollar sign.

Hi,

Look in

Tools|Autocorrect options

type ACN in the replace box and delete the autocorrect option.

Depending on your needs, you may instead choose to unclick the entire
"Replace text as you type" option. If you work with stock symbols a lot,
this could happen again to you, without you even noticing. That could be a
Bad Thing.

As for the dollar/percent sign thing, it sounds like once you entered a
dollar sign Excel decided it was a currency value; to correct it, go to the
formatting options and change it to a percent value. That's in Options,
Cells, in the Number tab.
