Hi,

I've been sent an excel file with custom add-ins and links. When I
open the xls file in excel 2000 I choose not to UPDATE the links -
which opens the xls file correctly and all the values within the file
are correct. However, when I open this same xls file in excel 2003 and

choose also not to UPDATE the links, all the calculations are
INCORRECT. I assume the cause is because I do not have the add-in
which is used in the xls file. What I don't understand is why it works

for one version and not the other. Can someone please help me
configure excel 2003 to avoid this problem

When you open an Excel file in a newer version than it was created in,
then it will be recalculated (and therefore must have access to the
linked files and Add-Ins).

I have not tested it, but you might possibly be able to avoid this
recalculation by setting Tools|Options|Calculations to manual before you
open the file.

xl2002+ likes to recalculate any workbooks that were created in previous
versions. In earlier versions of excel, if you answer No to the update links
prompt, the existing values are kept. In xl2002+, you get those errors.

Jim Rech posted a registry tweak:

Maybe it'll work for you.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for your reply...setting the calculations to MANUAL will work
however, I do not want to set this option since a lot of other xls
files I use will need the AUTOMATIC calculation. If the AUTOMATIC calc
is forgotten to be put back in place a lot of financial calc will be
incorrect. I am looking for another solution....
