Please help

I am using Excel XP on a nice new machine with 256mb RAM, and am using
relatively simple sheets. After using them for about an hour or so,
when I ask it to do a simple calculation, it takes for ever.

On checking processor utilization, I find it at between 60 and 100 %
and display not responding.

Anybody know why? or what I can do about it?

Thanks

This might be another long shot if you didn't find something that worked.

Excel keeps track of changes to the toolbars in a file called *.xlb (name and
location vary with versions of excel and versions of windows).

Maybe your *.xlb is corrupt and causing trouble.

Close excel
Use windows Start button|find to search for *.xlb
rename it (or them) to *.xlbOLD.

restart excel test drive it for awhile.

If that didn't work, then rename your *.xlbOLD back to *.xlb

(if it did work, you'll have to rebuild any manual changes to your toolbars.)

I don't have any idea, but cleaning the windows temp folder never caused a
problem. (It may not help, though.)

You may want to take a look at these two sites (Charles Williams and David
McRitchie):

http://www.decisionmodels.com
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/slowresp.htm

(until you find the cause, remember to save often.)
