Out of the blue Excel 2000 started hanging when I tried to paste data from
another excel file.

I uninstalled and then reloaded Office 2000. I reloaded Windows 98. no
change in the problem.

When I try to open and then exit a fresh file excel gets rid of the standard
buttons and address toolbars and then hangs the system. I have no other
option than ctrl-alt-delete. If I persevere, it says that system resources
are scarce and gives me the option of close or ignore but those buttons
don't work either.

Yahoo mail reported that it had scanned the files for viruses before
bringing them down.

This sounds to me more like a Windows problem than an Excel one, try posting
on
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
There are many experts there that can help,
Regards,
Alan
