event sounds

My event sound scheme used to work; now, the test arrow in Control Panel is
the only way sounds play. When the actual event occures (log off/on,
staryup/shutdown, new mail, etc, I hear nothing. I don't recall changing
anything, but, there must be a setting somewhere that I accidentally changed.
Please help troubleshoot this with me. Thanks!
