Is it possible to, in the event of Event error, have an email or other
notification eg desktop msg displayed. Rather than examining logs on a
regular basis.
Currently using win2k but wondered if such may be available in winxp.
Or perhaps someone knows of such an addin that may be available.

Are you There?

In Windows XP select Start, Administrative Tools, Services, double click
the Error Reporting Service and change the StartUp type to Automatic. It
does give you all but it alerts you to problems. Also you might want to
verify that the Alerter Service is set to Automatic.

Hope this helps.

As I said I was using win2k and whilst in that info is written to the event
log there is no notification of any event errors. You have to open the event
log to view any.
I wondered if the functionality had been improved in winxp.
Your post doesnt make it clear as to whether there is any notification msg.

For info I've done google but the only addins I've found so far are
'enteprise' solutions, priced accordingly

You get a pop up from the Error Reporting Service to ask whether you
want the Error Report to be sent to Microsoft unless the Service is
turned off . You do not get these pop ups for Warning and Information
reports. These you have to view in Event Viewer. There is one web site
specialising in Event Viewer Reports but a lot of reports are not
recorded there. Searching in Google is becoming more fruitful but their
interpretation remains sketchy.
