Hi All,
My copy of the vista is now saying that i need to buy a copy of vista. What
is the best way to buy, can i buy a new activation key from windows or do i
need to install a new copy completely???????

Hi marccon,

You need to buy an copy of the release version and install it. You can
purchase an upgrade version and start it from within the prerelease
evaluation software, then perform a custom install. Backup any data you
have, as this will be a clean installation. If you want to merely upgrade to
the final code without doing a clean install, you would need to purchase
Ultimate.

Hi Marccon,

What Rick says is true that you have to buy a new copy of Vista, but can I
suggest that whatever version you buy whether it be Home Premium, Business or
Ultimate that you do a clean install instead of an upgrade of you existing
o/s. Many people here will tell you that the only proper way to go is with a
clean installation as it does save you heaps of dramas in the future.
Yes, do backup your data first onto cd/dvd or you will lose it all.

First, you need to seek psychiatric help to understand why you would do
such a self-defeating thing. Wait until Vista Service Pack #2 (at least
#2) is out before you consider buying it.

Buy a retail copy. If you get any activation issue you can call MS to
fix it.

I'm sitting here very happy with my copy of Vista Ultimate & have no plans
to change that, but Ubuntu is by no means crap.
I have used it on other laptops (I only ever use laptops) & it has installed
all hardware perfectly incl wireless networking.
I'd have no problems recommending it to folks who just want to word process,
email, use the net, work with graphics files, listen to music etc etc.
I've no experience of it with other apps so can't personally recommend it
for anything else.
Maybe others have used it more indepth than me here?

For those on a strict budget also it may be a option as the free price tag
is very attractive.

I can't play flight sim x in Ubuntu either, plus i'm not on a budget, but it
is a alternative for some folks.

I agree. It's a"fun" os for the usage you've described. It is not
however, an os for serious business use as the lintards and linux trolls
in this ng keep saying it is.

I've got linux on one partition and vista home premium running o the other. I
was subscibed to beta2 release, downloaded several times but with no success
since the md5 sum did not match. So I went out and found a pre release
edition (RTM build6000) and activated it with my beta2 key.. Now my question
is: my license is also expiring. I want to upgrade to home premium that means
I want to preserve my programs files and settings. Is that an option in my
case? Which version of vista should I buy ? Would vista home premium upgrade
dvd do it or do I have to purchase ultimate as it seems so from Rick Rogers's
response..(I'd like to mention that if upgrade is not an option in this case
or it would only be available at an expensive price of ultimate, microsoft
might loose one more precious customer candidate..) with regards.. -orhan
from turkiye-

That build number "RTM build6000" is the release version,
that can not be activated with a beta key.

If you have Beta2 or RC1 you can buy a retail upgrade disc
of any Vista version. Most users installed the Ultimate version
when they were using the betas. You said Home Premium. If
you have HP installed and want to do an in-place-upgrade you
will have to buy the Home Premium upgrade. If you have Ultimate
installed and buy a HP upgrade version, you will have to do a clean
install.
