\etc\ files

Hello,

I was wondering if someone can help me out. I am looking to
see the purpose of the %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc files.
I already know hosts.

in theory I know lmhosts but I have never seen it accually work.

but the rest can someone explain what they are how they are used and
all the fun stuff.

I tried googleing it and wasn't geting anywhere I even tried MS still
no luck.

If you open it up with Notepad it tells you what it does.

here's what it says

# local networks. Network numbers are recognized in dotted decimal

#
# For example:
#

Why would I want to add names and networks.
IE my desktop is multi-homed. Why should I put a entery for each
network?
I can do the same with my laptop. Again Why? what is the purpose of
this file?

I have searched with google and microsoft and got no info.
Plenty on hosts and lmhosts but those aren't my primary concern.
