Dear all,

Just like to know how long (approxmately, reasonable and in average) it
would take to finish all the following tasks, for two types of person with
two levels of skill, 1. beginner and 2. expert with MCSE etc?

The PC is now running 98 and an extra disk would be added to house the XP.
The higher management is interested to know the time to finish those tasks,
for management needs I guess.

1. Windows XP Professional setup
2. Windows XP Professional SP-1 installation
3. WinXP Pro. SP-1 network configuration
4. WinXP Pro. SP-1 network configuration to join a local domain
5. Win XP patches installation for security control
6. Win XP updated patches installation
7. OfficeXP SP-2 installation except MS Outlook
8. Office XP SP-2 Multi-user language pack TC&SC
9. interim Testing or backup
10. MS Outlook site license vertification & checking
11. Disk backup for the newly installed WinXP
12. MS Outlook & SP-2 installation
13. Printer setup : HP1170C, HP4050N & Espon Photo 870EQ1 : DJ1120C &
HP4050, Xerox340 & Xerox506
HP 1170C Printer Sharing for another workgroup
14. Software installation for the following software :
Photoshop 7.0.1, LivePix 2.1 Deluxe , Reproduction Lab, Adobe Acrobat
Reader 6.0, Adobe Acrobat & Distuiller 5.0, Irfanview, WS-FTP, Easy
CD Creator, Semantec Antivirus, WinZip 8.1
15. Other services setup or configure : email clients setup,ISadmin setup,
CD-ROM writing setup, Epson Photo printing

Thanks and rgds,
Maria

Hi Frisch,

Thanks for the information.

With refer to the MS's project guide, I think I'm not facing a planning or
scheduling problem as I could try to follow those steps mentioned, it is
actually realted to time. My surpervisor, a MCSE (of course I'm not),
suggested that those works or tasks could be finished within one day and
that he could even do that in few hours.

I am not too sure about myself and I think I have no position to counter
propose the time I would need, particularly those related to those software
installation, and so I just could ask here, so that I know if I could spend
more extra hours from now to catch up with XP installtion details, and then
to try to suggest how long I would need to the managers, and hopefully also,
to catch up with those experts around me.

Please kindly advise.

Thanks again and regards,
Maria

It would be hard to estimate something like this, as one factor is how fast
the computer is at transferring data. It also depends on whether you'll have
everything you need sitting there in front of you, or whether you'll need to
hunt up information, drivers, etc. It also depends on whether you run into
any problems, and what you have to do to solve the problems. If you go to
install that second hard drive and you find that you need to rearrange
everything in the case to make it fit and connect, it's going to take longer
than if it fits fine without problems. If you need to go hunt up a new cable
or power connector, how long will that take? If you have to find and
download drivers for XP for some of the hardware, how long will that take?

I would say that "a couple of hours" is greatly optimistic, leaves
absolutely no room for problems, and assumes a fast machine. On the other
hand, if things go wrong, you might spend days troubleshooting one little
glitch.

Thanks and I think that would be much easier for me if they could take all
these mentioned factors into consideration.

As for me, I think it should be reasonable to allocate some time to test
some of those software for their compatibilities even if those software are
already there together with all the necessary H/W drivers, assuming that the
installation of XP itself is free from any problems. I guess I just could
not know them all in a relatively short period of time.

I think that those who qualified for MCSE should be able to tackle problems
right away whenever they pop up, and so might be able to finish all those
tasks within few hours. For the same reason, I think they should be able to
judge how much longer a begginer would need for finishing those tasks in
comparison with theirs.

So, I guess it is no harm to try to ask for some more time for the whole
exercise (it is not fixed yet), but before that, I would just like to know,
for a beginner in general, and in my case, I don't even have a spare PC for
testing things out, would it be reasonable or fair to ask for a few days,
say 3 days (or 4 days) to have those task completed? including the
installation of XP?

Thanks and rgds,
Maria

It seems to me that someone has been arguing with an MCSE over how long it
would take to do these things, and that someone is trying to get proof that
the someone is not a buffoon as suggested by the MCSE, and that the someone
could do the job but not in the seemingly short and unreasonable time frame
that the MCSE claims..

I have an answer for all of this.. suggest to the company that they widen
all doorways so that the MCSE can pass freely around.. and quit arguing..
lol

Hi Mike,

Maybe so for the company, but I don't even trying to think to argue back,
simply because I need the job, so I better to plan and try to better prepare
myself for the tasks.

If they, MCSE or not, say 3 hours, I don't think I have too much choices,
also simply because I need the job.

rgds

Thanks and rgds
