What are the Essential Softwares one should download when surfing the
Net. I ask this because though I have Windows Media Player I could not
view a .MOV file I had to Download Quicktime. In the process I also
downloaded Real Player just in case (this is because at work it is used
along with Windows Media Player...

Then there is Macromedia and Flash (or are they the same and do I
require it?

I have a Firewall and Anti-Virus software but any other recommended
programs?

Download Ad-Aware and run it to get rid of spyware from your system.

Also get "Spybot Search & Destroy" from:-

Download link on left of that page.

Use both programs regularly.

Make sure you update both of them regularly.

Question:

There are two programs out there with similar names to the one's listed
above. I am already aware that Ad-Aware is one wonderful program and
have used it regularly since earlier this year.

My question is about SpyBot Search and Destroy.

There's a program out there that's supposed to do what SpyBot says it
does; I used one earlier this year, and a different one (with a similar
name) late last year. One of these two actually compromises system
integrity by leaving an open back door for hackers, worms, and spyware.
Would you be able to tell me whether or not it's SpyBot Search and
Destroy? Or do I have this program confused with the other program with
a similar name?

*sorry if I sound a bit disjointed here; I just cannot remember the name
of the program with a similar name to SpyBot*
