XP with SP2 and keep gettting application errors in system restore (can't
launch - rstrui.exe failure in mshtml.dll); security centre (unable to
establish event queries with WMI to monitor third party antivirus software);
and user accounts (mshta.exe application failure).
Are they connected in some way?

Hi Kelly,
Thanks very much for your help - it solved two of my issues but still can't
get security centre to establish event queries with WMI ...
Also I'm now getting My Documents opening towards the end of boot up.
Nothing in startup so why?
I also get IIS snap-in failed to initialize in Microsoft Management Console.
Thanks again

Most welcome. If you are running Pro go to Start/Run: services.msc
Make sure WMI is started. As for IIS reinstall it.

For My Documents:

Some users have reported having the Worm_Dandi.A. You can run a free scan
from here: http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default2.asp

More info:

This problem can be caused by the DlDer Trojan. More information here:

Checkpoints and suggestions:

Run: My Documents Folder Opens Upon Boot (for C:\) Right hand side - Line
255
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

In the right pane under Userinit, Change the key that reads:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe

To: C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,

Another checkpoint to consider:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to these keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If the folder in question is listed, place the entire path in quotes.

Troubleshooting Windows XP

Hi Kelly,
Thanks yet again. All fixes worked except the Security Centre still not
recognizing my Trend antivirus program.
I am running Pro; WMI is running and I reinstalled IIS.
Anymore ideas?
Thanks

If everything else is fixed except for Security Centre not recognizing
your TrendMicro av, don't worry about it. Open the Security Centre
applet in Control Panel and click on the left-side link that says,
"Change how Security Centre alerts me" and uncheck the alerts for av.

Hi,
Yes, that's what I'm doing. And I guess I could try reinstalling the Trend
antivirus software and see if that sorts out the problem.
Thanks

Don't bother reinstalling your av just because Security Center doesn't
recognize it. This doesn't mean your av isn't working. Just turn off
the Security Center alerts like I told you.
