Errors reinstalling Win XP Pro :: Please Help!!

Recently I have had a bunch of small problems with Windows XP Pro but
it has turned to a nightmare. It started with some of the programs
like Windows File manager lossing it's dropdown menus and toolbars.
someone had suggested repairing it but it didn't work. I had decided
to save everything off to CD but at the crucial time the CD burner
decided it was just a CD player now and will not write to CD anymore.
After several attempts to correct that I made an even bigger mistake
.....I figured I would reinstall Windows XP. After getting the nerves
up to do it I dropped in the Disk and restarted my computer. I chose
the upgrade option so that I wouldn't lose my settings .............
however something didn't work!! instead of saving the settings, XP
has locked out some of my files!! when I click on them I get an error
message that says Access is denied!! It will not allow me to cut,
copy, or even view some my files!! mind you not all of the file but a
good portion ....roughly 4Gb of photos.

All I want at this point is to get my files off my computer so that I
can reformat the hard drive

can anyone please help? I need to get access somehow

If not I hope you had a good chuckle at my expense ;-)
