every tiume i boot up my desktop with windows 98 i get an
error message saying

cannot find a device file that may be needed to run
windows or a windows application
the windows registry or system.ini file refers to this
device file, but the device fiel no longer exists.
if you deleted thsi file on purpose, try uninstalling the
associated application using its uninstall or setup
program.
if you still want to use the application associated with
thsi device file,try reinstalling the application to
replace the missing file.

Message from Ron Martell extracted from Google:

Extract a new copy of the file from your Windows 98 CDROM.

Use Start - Run - SFC and choose the option to extract a file.

In the original releast Windows 98 it is in the NET10.CAB file and in
Windows 98 Second Edition it is in Net9.CAB

Save the extracted file into c:\windows\system
